01 · What Is This Scan

Your Baby's Heart, Studied In Detail.

Fetal echocardiography is a dedicated ultrasound examination of the baby's heart, performed by a fetal medicine specialist. It examines cardiac chambers, valves, great arteries, rhythm and blood flow using colour and spectral Doppler. Recommended for pregnancies with cardiac risk factors, family history, maternal diabetes, or when a routine scan raises concerns.

02 · Why It Matters

  • Congenital heart disease is the most common serious birth defect
  • Early detection allows delivery at a centre with cardiac surgical backup
  • Detects rhythm abnormalities that may need in-utero treatment
  • Provides reassurance for high-risk pregnancies

03 · What We Check

A Systematic, Head-To-Toe Assessment.

Four-chamber view and chamber sizes

Aortic and pulmonary outflow tracts

Three-vessel and three-vessel-trachea view

Aortic and ductal arches

Atrioventricular valve function

Ductus venosus and superior vena cava

Fetal heart rate and rhythm analysis

A Note From Dr. Archana

"Fetal echo is one of my sub-specialty areas. It is not simply a longer scan — it is a completely different imaging discipline. Ask your obstetrician if you should have one."

06 · FAQs

Common Questions About The Fetal Echocardiography.

Do all pregnancies need a fetal echo?

No. It's recommended for maternal diabetes, family history of heart disease, IVF pregnancies, twins, exposure to certain medications, or when a routine scan is inconclusive.

Is this different from what my anomaly scan covered?

Yes. The anomaly scan includes cardiac views, but fetal echo is a dedicated, deeper study performed by a fetal medicine specialist.

What happens if an abnormality is found?

We counsel you and coordinate with a pediatric cardiologist. Many conditions have excellent outcomes when the delivery is planned at a centre with pediatric cardiac support.
